Business Impact Story

Impact Snapshot IoT for public administration: more secure data and more resource-efficient solutions

Challenge: modern connectivity

Dataport is the name of the IT and communications service provider for the public administrations of the German states of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen, and Saxony-Anhalt, as well as for tax authorities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony. Dataport also manages the municipal IT network of Schleswig-Holstein. For public administrations, IT security is paramount – as is communication that must function reliably across hundreds of thousands of voice channels and connections in public offices and other institutions. The challenge: while authorities must adhere to the highest security standards, millions of people expect modern digital services.

Solution: stable roaming

Dataport relies on O2 Business’s IoT connectivity – with global SIM cards and the Kite platform, which enable secure data transmission and central management of all IoT devices – for example, also for
  • smart metering for electricity consumption,
  • environmental monitoring stations for documenting air and water quality,
  • fire protection systems for greater safety,
  • electric car charging stations and parking spaces for sustainable mobility,
  • patient data from ambulances for rapid medical care.
The IoT solution offers higher bandwidth, lower latency and fewer failures – even in rural areas – thus creating the basis for edge computing and data-intensive applications.

Sustainable added value: securely networked, smartly managed

Federal states and municipalities can rely on the solution through national roaming – regardless of the local infrastructure. In case of failure or weak connection, the IoT SIM cards automatically switch to the strongest available network, which generally enables uninterrupted data transmission.

The Kite platform ensures efficient management: administration, updates and monitoring of all IoT SIM cards and devices are centralised and simplified by the platform.

The solution also complies with GDPR standards, thus offering a high level of data security. O2 Telefónica manages over 35 million mobile connections and offers IoT roaming in more than 150 countries – supported by a global network of 295 partners in over 180 countries. The IoT initiative is part of a comprehensive digital strategy for states and municipalities to shape digitalisation more sustainably.
