Business Impact Story
Impact Snapshot Less energy, more comfort: heating control with IoT
Challenge: reliable networking
The “termios ProEfficient” thermostats from Efficient Residential Heating GmbH are designed to intelligently control heating systems in residential buildings, thereby enabling energy savings, cost reductions and CO2 emission reductions – an important, potential contribution by the housing industry to achieving climate goals.
The smart radiator thermostats measure the room temperature and transmit the data wirelessly to small receivers called gateways. These gateways then send the information via the mobile network directly to a central “heating cloud”. There, software analyses the data and calculates the optimal heating settings. Sensors detect, for example, the presence of people or open windows.
Central to the system’s functionality is the data connection between the gateways and the heating cloud. This transmission must be reliable and secure, regardless of the local infrastructure, whether domestic or international. Efficient Residential Heating GmbH sought a secure solution for this gateway connectivity.

Solution: stable mobile connections
For secure data transmission, special IoT SIM cards from O2 Business are used in the receiving devices (gateways), enabling a stable mobile connection everywhere – via national and international roaming. This allows the heating data to reach the central heating cloud independently of the existing IT infrastructure.
To help housing companies maintain an overview of thousands of devices, Telefónica also offers the so-called Kite platform. This allows updates to be rolled out for all IoT SIM cards and devices, operations to be monitored, and rapid responses to any issues that may arise – all while ensuring data privacy.

Sustainable added value: working together for greater climate protection
O2 Business’s scalable, secure, and reliable IoT network, including the Kite platform, forms the basis for the cost-saving potential of the termios thermostat, which, according to the manufacturer, saves up to 30% on heating energy and costs, thus simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions. This, the manufacturer states, makes it easier to comply with legal requirements such as those of the German Building Energy Act (GEG).
